FXU President Exeter update: March 2015

Once a month, one of our e-newsletters will come to you direct from the Presidents and we’ll be sharing their activities here on the blog. They’ll be letting you know who they’ve been liaising with, which high-level meetings they’ve been attending and what we can update you on with regards to this year’s Top Ten priorities. Here’s what FXU President Exeter, Rhun Davies, has been working on as the spring term comes to an end.

Library fees
As part of our campaign to eliminate additional course costs/costs not included within your fees, as well as our Top Ten priority of financial transparency, we’re looking into the future of library fines and possible alternatives. This project revolves around student feedback and therefore it’s important for you to let us know your views on this issue, which you can do by completing this short survey.

International Student Experience Focus Groups
As the university continues to grow its international student numbers, I’m making sure that there is correct and sufficient infrastructure in place to support the needs of international students. In order to do so I will be running focus groups over the next few weeks to see if you feel sufficiently supported and how your experience could be enhanced. To get involved, please contact me via email (rhun.davies@fxu.org.uk) or drop into the office.

Academic Survey
We are offering one lucky student £100 for completing our academic survey. To enter the draw, just complete the survey here. #1 in our Top 10 this year is to achieve better academic practise, including increased contact hours and quality of assessment. I have written this survey in conjunction with your Exeter Education Officers, Alice Nicholls and Grace Fisher, and the feedback you provide here will be vital in supporting how these areas can be improved.

Top Ten priorities

My Vote Matters
We are looking for a student to produce a short film for us, highlighting our Voter Registration Day/My Vote Matters activities on Thursday 19 March. As the campaign is ongoing, we will provide you with additional/existing footage to edit into the final video. Filming on the day will also include interviews with the My Vote Matters team. We will also allow time for editing, with the intention of having the final video ready early April. We have a budget of £200 for a student with relevant skills and experience. If you’re interested, please email me in the first instance and pop in for a full brief on Monday 16 March.

President Elections
Congrats to the newly elected Presidents and commiserations to those who were unsuccessful. I’m sure you all learned a lot through campaigning. Congratulations in particular to Grace Fisher, my successor, and thank you everyone for voting. The Exeter voter turnout this year was an incredible 50.4% – currently the highest in the sector in the UK so far this year. Efforts are already being put in place for the 2015-16 academic year and I’m looking forward to working with Grace on the handover period.
